2015 WSOP Main Event - Here’s A Look At The November Nine

2015 WSOP Main Event - Here’s A Look At The November Nine

At the beginning of July, 6,240 players plunged deep into the action of the world’s most prestigious annual poker tournament. After 7 intense days, the field has finally been reduced to just 9 players. Now, play has stopped and will start up again in November, hence the remaining nine players being dubbed the "November Nine". The delay has taken place since 2008 to create more hype than it already has.

With famous poker pro Daniel Negreanu still a realistic chance of reaching the final table this year, that meant there was also a lot of attention surrounding the November Nine bubble. Every time Negreanu scooped a pot, his rail of supporters could be heard cheering loudly. But much to their disappointment and frustration, the guy called “Kid Poker” was knocked out in 11th place.

But all that aside, we can still expect a great deal in terms of excitement and action when the final table gets underway on Sunday November 8th at 5:30 pm PST. Anticipation for who will win the Main Event builds for four months, and all the final table action will be aired live on ESPN, with full coverage of the 2015 WSOP Main Event televised between now and then, so you dont miss a thing.

The chip leader is Joe McKeehen, a professional poker player from Pennsylvania. He is sitting comfortable with 63 million in chips (160 big blinds), and will be looking to use his big stack to bully the short stacks at the final table. McKeehen had busted Negreanu. The actual “bubble boy” that busted in 10th place, Alexander Turyansky, was also knocked out by McKeehen. Hence the massive chip lead McKeehen had built on Day 7.

The second biggest stack heading into November is Israels Zvi Stern, who is perhaps the least known November Niner. Stern was seen sporting his signature blue hoodie at the table. The 36-year-old has 29.8 million in chips. With 75 big blinds, there is quite a big gap between the first and second biggest chip stacks, but Stern will still feel like he has a good chance to go all the way.

Third in chips is Neil Blumenfield. The 61-year-old is the President and COO of a software company. He will begin the final table with 22 million in chips (55 big blinds), and while he would love to win poker’s most prestigious tournament, he will be comfortable regardless of what happens.

Belgiums Pierre Neuville is fourth in chips with 21.1 million. He is, in fact, the oldest November Niner. The 72-year-old is showing that age is just a number and can still play No Limit Hold’em at a very high level. Once the final table action begins, he will no doubt be looking to prove that he can hold his own against the online poker generation. Besides making this year’s Main Event final table, he’s also had a lot of success in previous WSOP and EPT main events. His love for games extends far beyond just poker, the Belgian is a former board game creator and executive.

The fifth biggest chip stack is Max Steinberg, a poker pro from California. He made a deep run in the 2013 WSOP Main Event, and is actually the only November Niner to have a WSOP bracelet, after taking down a $1,000 No-Limit Holdem event the previous year. Before making the November Nine, he had pocketed $1.9 million in lifetime tournament earnings. Steinberg will start the final table with 20.2 million in chips.

Thomas Cannuli is the sixth biggest chip stack heading into the final table. Primarily an online cash game player on New Jersey poker sites, he still likes his chances of doing something very special in the Main Event. The 23-year-old from New Jersey has 12.25 million in chips (around 30 big blinds to play with). A timely double up came on Day 7 when Pierre Neuville (who was the chip leader at the time) called with A9 but was dominated by Cannuli’s AK which held.

Seventh in chips is another player from New Jersey with a similar sized stack, Josh Beckley, who heads into the November Nine final table with 11.8 million in chips. Having been a poker pro for less than a year, Beckley has already accomplished more than most poker players dream of. Prior to final tabling the 2015 WSOP Main Event, Beckley’s live cashes totalled over $200k, which includes a $98k score in the $1,500 Parx Casino Big Stack event in 2014. He also grinds online on New Jersey poker sites.

Patrick Chan is the first of the very short stacked players at the final table, eighth in chips with only 6.22 million (around 15 big blinds). The New York poker pro began playing live poker games after the Black Friday online poker indictments and hasn’t looked back since. A very accomplished poker player, he had already earned a half a million dollars in live tournament cashes before hitting his biggest tournament score

And finally, Federico Butteroni from Italy rounds out the final nine players that make up the November Nine for 2015! He will begin the final table with the shortest stack having 6.2 million in chips to play with. The 25-year-old has already had a deep run in the 2015 World Series of Poker, a 20th place finish in the Monster Stack, which was good for $45k.

All nine players will be guaranteed at least a million dollar payday, but they will all have their eyes set on the $7.7 million that is going to the eventual winner, as well as the coveted WSOP gold bracelet. The November Nine action spans over 3 days, with nine handed action playing down to four players, once play recommences. The second day of the final table will continue until just two players remain. And then a winner is decided on November 10.
