Jens Voertmann has revealed that when he is dealt a big hand in poker, he prefers to bet strongly from the outset, particularly against a loose opponent.
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner said that players should be looking to make the most out of a strong hand, reports the Mercury News.
He said that this can be achieved by pushing up the bets and ensuring that there is a large number of chips in the pot.
Voertmann said: "I tried to make big bets to pump the pot up. If he doesn't have anything at all, I wouldn't get much action anyhow, but in case he has something, I want to get as many chips as possible."
As well as ensuring that a strong hand is not wasted with a small win, pushing up early bets can minimise the chances that opponents with average hands will call and see a cheap flop.
Voertmann's win at the WSOP came in the $3,000 HORSE event and earned him $298,253.
