Poker professional Ben Roberts has asserted that poker is a game that relies entirely on skill rather than luck.
In an article for the Hendon Mob, he said many gamers believe the ratio of skill to luck is 70 per cent to 30 per cent or 90 per cent to ten per cent.
However, Roberts stated that success in the popular card game depends upon the abilities of the individual player.
He accepted that "variance" is a part of poker and that there are bound to be bad beats and lucky moments, but he said these are unlikely to affect the long-term performance of gamers.
"The fact is, these kinds of events should have less of an impact on your overall results the more you play," Roberts explained.
According to the poker pro, if a player sticks to a strategy, does not vary their stakes, has a certain level of ability and plays over a long period of time, their results are likely to be positive.
This could be supported by the experiences of Norwegian poker pro Annette Obrestad who famously beat 180 online players in a tournament despite only looking at her cards once.
She used her knowledge of betting patterns and reading ability to triumph in the competition.
