When shortstacked in a competition, it is advisable to move in with a marginal hand rather than be forced to call with one, it has been claimed.
A poker expert at PaddyPower.com has said that whoever moves in first could have the advantage, as they give their opponent the chance to fold first.
If each player holds a similar hand, such as A-9 or K-J, moving in can apply pressure to other players, forcing them to call if they want to play.
This is particularly true with this kind of hand, because it is not strong enough to go all-in with, but not quite strong enough to call an all-in with either.
Being in charge of one of the shortstacks is not necessarily the end of a run in a poker tournament.
Recently, this was proved by Jerry Yang who won the 2007 World Series of Poker main event despite starting the final table with the second smallest number of chips.
The chipleader Phil Hilm began with over 22 million chips compared with Yang's eight million, but it was Hilm who came in ninth.
