2012 WSOP Main Event Day 1B
July 9,2012 : GOOD TURNOUT FOR WORLD SERIES OF POKER DAY 1B (Update)
3,160 players so far is an encouraging indicator for main event organisers
Day 1B of the $10,000 buy-in World Series of Poker main event launched Sunday with 2,114 entrants, boosting total sign-ups so far this year to 3,160 and encouraging officials in their belief that the final numbers will easily top 6,500.
UFC fighter and celebrity player Georges St. Pierre gave the 'Shuffle and Deal' call, accompanied by some amusing puns based on bad beats which entertained the packed venue at the Rio in Las Vegas.
Spotted among the entrants for Day 1B were Dennis Philips, Collin Moshman, Dan Harrington, Mickey Petersen and Ashton Griffin, along with athletes like former Detroit Lions tight end Eric Stocz.
Other poker luminaries included Jason Somerville, Maria Ho, Jake Cody, Eugene Katchalov, Brian Rast and Darvin Moon who had all amassed above-average stacks by the final level of the night.
Three tables attracted attention due to their star quotient, seating former champs Peter Eastgate (2008), Carlos Mortensen (2001), and Dan Harrington (1995).
Sadly by the dinner break Mortenson, along with Greg Raymer, was gone; they were followed later - at level 3 - by Dennis Phillips and other bracelet winners like Carter Phillips, Adam Friedman, Scott Montgomery and Victor Ramdin.
Tom Dwan has also been eliminated, as has Gavin Griffin, Jason Koon, Ville Wahlbeck and Joe Sebok.
The positive news was that Scotty Nguyen, Huck Seed, Dan Harrington, Peter Eastgate and Jerry Yang were all still in action when InfoPowa went to press, and Daniel Negreanu was doing well, both in poker and entertaining his fellow players and the railbirds. Going into the final level of the day Negreanu was one of the top ten stacks
Other big stacks after eight hours of action and with the final level underway were Bryan Pellegrino, Maria Ho, Jason Somerville, Galen Hall, Sammy Farha, Eugene Katchalov and Shaun Deeb.
Side issues of note Sunday included the announcement that 2010 champion Jonathan Duhamel will be awarded a new WSOP main event winner's bracelet Monday to replace the one extensively damaged in a robbery at his home late last year
