2013 WSOP Day 1C
Monday July 8,2013 : DAY 1C WORLD SERIES OF POKER MAIN EVENT REGISTRATIONS SLOW
Last entry day has many top players at the tables, but the numbers so far are low
The final day for World Series of Poker main event registrations was producing disappointing results when we went to press, admittedly before registrations closed.
Unofficial figures of around 3,200 were being bruited about by tournament observers, which would make total entries for the event far short of the hoped-for 7,000 players.
Days 1A and 1B of the opening round produced chip leaders Evan Panesis of Kansas, with 190,975 and Clement Tripodi from France, with 207,050 chips, and a total of 2,885 entries.
Day 1C opened with a tribute to internet player Chris Moneymaker, who set online poker afire 10 years ago by winning the WSOP main event as an internet amateur, and has become something of an icon in the industry.
Tournament director Ty Stewart saluted Moneymaker and unveiled a bronze bust depicting him in typical pose, wearing his trademark baseball cap and sunglasses.
Moneymaker was not the only former main event champion on the 1C registration list; also spotted at the tables were Jerry Yang, Tom McEvoy (1983), Johnny Chan (1987, 1988), Huck Seed (1996), Carlos Mortensen (2001), Robert Varkonyi (2002), Joe Hachem (2005), Jonathan Duhamel (2010) and Jamie Gold (2006), with Phil Hellmuth absent but expected.
Other notable names taking their seats included former November Niners Eric Buchman, Joe Cheong, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, and Jeff Shulman, along with Allen Cunningham, Antonio Esfandiari, Maria Ho, Kathy Liebert, and actress Jennifer Tilly.
