2013 WSOP Event 9 and Event 10
Friday June 7,2013 : MORE GOLD AT WORLD SERIES OF POKER
Bracelets for online poker veteran and a poker pro from Illinois
Two more World Series of Poker bracelets - one a first and the other a second for the winners - have been awarded in Las Vegas with the conclusion of the $3,000 buy-in NLHE Shootout and $1,500 buy-in Limit Hold’em events - numbers 9 and 10 respectively on the WSOP schedule.
In event 9 the accomplished internet player Cliff “JohnnyBax” Josephy bested 643 other players to claim his second WSOP bracelet and the main prize of $299,486 in the $3,000 No Limit Hold’em Shootout after a tough final table that included Steve Silverman, Tim West, Chris Klodnicki, Max Steinberg and David “Bakes” Baker.
Josephy prevailed to finish in the heads up against Evan Silverstein, with the chip lead changing several times as the two players fought for supremacy until Josephy gained the upper hand and claimed the victory just short of fifty hands into the final passage of play.
Silverstein's effort and skill was rewarded with a second placing prize of $185,487.
Brent Wheeler, a laconic young poker pro from St. Charles, Ill., let his skills do the talking in event 10, a $1,500 buy-in Limit Hold’em competition that attracted 645 players, among them many big names in the game, and generated an $870,750 prize pool.
After several days of action the field was whittled down to a final table that included Wheeler, along with Mark Mierkalns, Malissia Zapata, Chiduziem Obi, Grayson Scoggin, William James, Brian Nichols, Alex Queen and Eric Froehlich.
That in turn distilled down to a hotly contested 100-hands heads up between Wheeler and Canadian player Mark Mierkalns before Wheeler was able to claim the victory, his first WSOP bracelet and the $191,605 main prize, sending Mierkalns home with the runner-up prize of $118,300.
