2013 WSOP Main Event Day 5
Sunday July 14,2013 : DAY 5 AT WORLD SERIES OF POKER THINS OUT THE FIELD TO 68 PLAYERS (Update)
Australia's Jackie Glazier the only woman left standing, and former champ Carlos Mortenson is in with a chance.
On Day 5 of the World Series of Poker main event the typical vagaries of poker saw the chip leader at the start of the day, Wisconsin pro Jon Lane, busted out deep into the 10-hour day at level 25, along with big names like Annette Obrestad, Josh Pollock, Marvin Rettenmaier, Nick Schwarmann, Grayson Ramage, Kevin Williams, Goran Mandic, Chris Johnson and Beverley Lange, all of whom earned $71,053 for their deep runs.
The exits of Obrestad and Lange made Aussie tournament pro Jackie Glazier ( on 4 mill plus chips) the lone remaining woman in the field at the end of Day 5 - she finished in twelfth position, with 68 players all that remains of the 6,352 hopefuls in the Main Event starting field a week ago.
Day 5 started with Jon Lane leading 239 survivors of Day 4 with just short of 3 million chips, but the relentless pace of eliminations thinned the field out to just 68 players at the end of the day, with the next pay-out level scheduled as $102,102.
The survivors returning to the felt on Sunday will have average chip stacks around 2,802,353, and they will be led by Sami Rustom at the head of the leaderboard with 7,005,000 in chips. It's a close-run struggle - he's just 10,000 chips ahead of Marc McLaughlin on 6,695,000.
The sad news is that last year's champ, Greg Merson will not be on the final table for 2013; despite a deep run he ran out of chips at level 22 during Day 5 and was eliminated by Brett Richey, ending his hopes of a signal back-to-back victory. His consolation was a 167th place pay-day of $42,990.
Also out after an impressive run was Ronnie Bardah at 124th for $50,752 - his fourth main event cash.
Still left in the hunt for poker's most prestigious prize are former champs Carlos Mortenson and JC Tran. The former is trying to repeat his 2001 main event victory, and this is his best positioning to achieve this so far in a sparkling career.
The last member of the 2012 final table still playing this year, Steve Gee, is one to watch as he tries to improve on his ninth place finish in 2012.
Maxx Coleman is another determined player who stands a good chance of winning; he has been crushing all opposition in this year’s main event and currently sits in 4th spot on 6,260,000.
However, the field is still full of formidable players that include Ryan Riess, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, David Benefield, Noah Schwartz, Chris Lindh, Amir Lehavot, Jonathan Jaffe, Yann Dion, Jim Collopy, Vitaly Lunkin, Mark Newhouse, Vladimir Geshkenbein, Brett Richey and Rep Porter.
Day 5 Top Ten chip counts were:
Sami Rustom 7,005,000 USA
Marc McLaughlin 6,695,000 Canada
Jason Mann 6,580,000 Canada
Maxx Coleman 6,260,000 USA
George Wong 5,740,000 China (Hong Kong)
Sylvain Loosli 5,690,000 France
Ryan Riess 5,570,000 USA
Keanu Tabali 5,435,000 USA
Matthew Reed 5,255,000 USA
Chris Lindh 4,070,000 USA
