Dimitar Danchev Wins PCA Bahamas
Monday January 14, 2013 : BULGARIAN PRO WINS MAJOR BAHAMAS POKER TOURNAMENT
Dimitar Danchev is the new PCA main event champ
26-year-old Bulgarian poker pro Dimitar Danchev has survived five tough days of poker and bested a field of 986 other players to take down the tenth anniversary edition Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas.
With the respect for winning such a major tourney and the trophy comes a first prize of $1,859,000, but Danchev had to earn it the hard way in a field full of international poker aces.
Danchev started final table action as the second-lowest chip count, but through dint of patience and the experience and skill to know when to play aggressively and when to await opportunities, he worked his way up through the chip counts until only Joel Micka stood in his way at the heads up.
That in itself was a sterling achievement on a final table that included Jerry Wong, Jonathan Roy, Owen Crowe, Andrew Shatilov, Yann Dion and Joao Nogueira. It was a particularly profitable adventure for the Nogueira, who won $165,000 for an eighth placing, but spent only $1.10 to qualify in a satellite tournament instead of having to buy-in for $10,300!
Thanks to Danchev's dominating chip count, the heads up was a brief affair in which Micka put up a spirited resistance but was soon overwhelmed - he took home an impressive consolatory second prize of $1,190,000.
For Danchev, who hails from Plovdiv in Bulgaria, it was a landmark prize, taking his career winnings over $2.8 million; his previous top win was Euro 600,000 in a European Poker Tour performance. It represents the best tournament result to date for a Bulgarian poker pro.
