Duhamel beats Racener in fast final table
Jonathan Duhamel (23) a player from Quebec became the first Canadian ever to win the WSOP main event early Monday evening, collecting a winners bracelet and $8,944,310.
The young Canadian bested 7319 entries for the competition, the second largest entry field recorded for the event.
Duhamel entered the final table as the significant chip leader, and although he was forced to relinquish his lead on two occasions, always managed to retrieve it to emerge in the heads-up against John Racener (24) with a 6-1 chip lead.
Once the heads-up had been reached in the early hours of Sunday morning, officials called a halt to the action and the two final players returned to the table on Monday evening taking less than two hours and 43 hands to decide the winner.
Racener's record consolation prize for his second placing was $5,545,955.
The end of the competition on Monday evening saw previous champion Joe Cada present the prestigious winners bracelet to Duhamel who exalted before a large pile of cash, cheered and applauded by a large and partisan Canadian spectator crowd.
