Poker Pro Marcus Bebb Jones Extradited
03/11/2012 : BRIT POKER PRO AWAITS HIS FATE IN THE U.S.A.
Extradited to the US fourteen years after the murder of his wife in Colorado
Marcus Bebb-Jones (48), a British professional poker player well-known on the land tournament circuit, is in a Colorado jail contemplating his future this weekend as he awaits a court decision Thursday on whether his trial for murder is to proceed.
Bebb-Jones was arrested in 2009 by British police acting on a US warrant for extradition regarding the murder of his wife that allegedly took place in 1997.
The poker player fought the extradition order for two years before being handed over to the American authorities in 2011, and is now in detention whilst the charges of murder against him are deliberated by a Colorado court.
The Sunday Star reports that Bebb-Jones is alleged to have killed his wife Sabrina more than 14 years ago in Colorado, where they ran a hotel.
Court documents claim he then fled to Las Vegas with his three year old son, where he spent a large amount of money gambling, hired prostitutes and then shot himself in an apparent suicide bid.
Charges were not filed until 2008, following the discovery four years earlier of Sabrina’s remains on a remote mountain pass, with head fractures indicating foul play. The investigation was reopened, and the extradition of Bebb-Jones - who had by then returned to his homeland with his son - commenced.
Bebb-Jones has already spent a year in an American jail before his appearance two weeks ago in court on a preliminary hearing. The court will decide his fate Thursday.
Colorado District Attorney Martin Beeson told the Daily Star Sunday: “The purpose of a preliminary hearing is to demonstrate to the court that there is sufficient evidence to bind the case over for trial.
“Assuming the judge binds the case over for trial it must be held within 180 days of the defendant entering his plea.
“He has not yet been required to enter a plea but will probably be required to do so soon after the prelim is completed.”
