Marvin Rettenmaier wins World Poker Tour World Championship
Sunday May 27, 2012 : GERMAN ACE TAKES WORLD POKER TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP HONOURS
Marvin Rettenmaier wins in eight-hour final table endurance test
Marvin Rettenmaier of Germany is having a great year at the tables in 2012, this week moving on from his April $156,186 first placing in the EPT Grand Final in Monaco to a $1.2 million victory in the $25,000 main event of the World Poker Tour World Championship.
The epic eight-hour long final table competition saw Rettenmaier, holding the chip lead, pitted against Philippe Ktorza, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, Nick Schulman, Steve O'Dwyer and Trevor Pope, who all ultimately left the table with six-figure pay checks. Many of them fell to the German ace's aggressive and skillful play.
When Mizrachi was ousted in the number three spot for $424,618, the heads up took centre stage, with Rettenmaier around 2 million chips ahead of his last opponent Philippe Ktorza.
It was the start of a long and exciting battle that saw the lead change several times and some spectacular double ups by both players as the contest increased in intensity with each hand.
In the end, and at around hand 200, it was the German who prevailed, leaving his very worthy opponent with the runner up prize of $805,310.
Rettenmaier took home almost $1.2 million in prize money - thought to be his biggest career win yet - and the WPT title and trophy, along with a seat in the 2013 WPT World Championship.
