Philipp Gruissem Wins European Poker Tour London High Roller competition
Saturday October 8, 2011 : GRUISSEM IS EPT LONDON HIGH ROLLER CHAMP
GBP 450,200 return on a GBP 20 000 buy-in is good going - again - for poker pro
Philipp Gruissem is on something of a heater in live tournament play, it seems; his 28th placing in the last WSOP main event won him $242,636, and after continuing to pick up some big money cashes in his "home" environment of online games, he went on to win the Euro 10 000 buy-in EPT Barcelona for Euro 234,500.
This week he topped that by winning the GBP 20 000 buy-in European Poker Tour London High Roller competition, besting a pro-studded entry field of 75 and winning another GBP450 200.
These cashes boost a career earnings total of over a million Euro in live tournament action, and double that online, where the young pro from Aachen, Germany can boast an impressive list of major cashes.
In his latest triumph, Gruissem had one of the lowest stacks when the final table was reached, where he faced an impressive range of final table opponents in Igor Kurganov, Rob Akery, Olivier Busquet, Adrian Bussman, Joel Nordkvist, Sam Trickett and Michael Tureniec.
The young German played a skilled and disciplined game, however, working his way through the survivors and building his chip stack. When play reached four-handed Gruissem, Kurganov, Akery and Busquet agreed to a chop, giving Gruissem the highest share but leaving enough cash in the pot to keep the game competitive.
It all came down to a heads up between Gruissem and Igor Kurganov, with the latter in charge as the final action commenced, leading Gruissem by a million chips. Gruissen kept his head and managed to pull ahead, then vanquished his last opponent to claim the main prize totalling Euro 450,200, leaving Kurganov with the runner up check for Euro 318,300.
