Philipp Gruissem claims A$ 825,000 main prize
The A$50,000 buy-in World Series of Poker Asia Pacific High Roller event was won by German poker pro Philipp Gruissem over the weekend after an exciting heads up with Joseph Cheong.
Gruissem's bank balance will take a A$ 825,000 boost as a result of his triumph Sunday at Melbourne's Crown Casino, increasing his career earnings to well above $4.7 million.
Among his opponents in the two day event were names like WSOP main event champions Joe Hachem and Jonathan Duhamel, and German ace Marvin Rettenmaier.
Battling through a talented field of 43 other players, and re-entering after busting out on Day 1, Gruissem survived to a final table that included Joseph Cheong, Paul Phua, Lo Shing Fung, Elton Tsang and Tom Hall.
When Gruissem eliminated Paul Phua in third place for A$ 325,000 the scene was set for a Gruissem vs. Cheong heads up, with Gruissem holding the chip advantage.
Undaunted by his opponent's lead, Cheong played an impressive game to at first draw level and then grab the chip lead from the German, who nevertheless managed to fight back into contention and then dominance, eventually sending his opponent home with a none-too-shabby second placing prize of A$ 511,000.
For Gruissem the victory was definitely career-enhancing after a remarkable run so far in 2013 which has seen him take second place in the Aussie Millions $25,000 buy-in Challenge for A$ 187,000.
