Another WSOP bracelet first-timer has emerged from Event 44, the $1 000 No-Limit Hold'em with Rebuys at the World Series of Poker, taken over the weekend by Toronto, Canada player Max Greenwood along with the main prize of $693 444.
879 players signed up for the competition, and with some 2 500 rebuys a total prize pool of $3.2 million was created. By the end of ten rounds, only 115 remained in contention and went through to Day 2. The field had included plenty of experienced talent, including Scott Clements, Humberto Brenes, Men "The Master" Nguyen, Stuart Paterson, Sam Simon, Peter Feldman and Eric Froehlich.
Down to the last nine players, the final table was pretty evenly balanced with five US players, and a Canadian, two Danes and a visitor from Belarus.
The chip lead was held by 22 year old Jesse Chinni, a good million chips ahead of his nearest opponent, the Danish player Rene Mouritsen. Other players were the eventual winner, Toronto's Max Greenwood, Scott Freeman, Curtis Kohlberg, Alex Bolotin, Albert Iversen, Aliaksandr Dzianisau and Phung Ngo.
The final heads up was reached after just over three hours of play, when Denmark's Albert Iversen was eliminated by Mauritsen, setting the scene for the final match between Greenwood and Mauritsen.
The Dane held a chip lead of several hundred thousand, but Greenwood was aggressive and dominant, seeing off the Dane in 25 hands and taking most of the pots. Mauritsen collected a second placing check for $445 523, whilst the Canadian victor secured his first WSOP bracelet and the record first prize for the event of $693 444.
