2012 World Series of Poker event 48
Friday June 29,2012 : 14 HOURS TO DECIDE WORLD SERIES OF POKER EVENT 48 (Update)
Kenny Hsiung from Ohio wins his first bracelet
Some of the names of the 247 professional players who entered the World Series of Poker event 48 - a $3,000 buy-in Limit Hold'em contest - read like a who's who of international on and offline poker; featured among them were Justin Bonomo, WSOP main event champ Josh Duhamel, Vladimir Shchmelev, Chad Brown and Dwyte Pilgrim.
Yet it was a little known pro player from Cincinatti and Mason in Ohio, 30-year-old Kenny Hsiung, who triumphed in the end after a marathon fourteen hour final table that emerged from three solid days of top-tier poker.
His spoils for the time and effort were the main prize of $165,205 and the prestige of earning his first WSOP bracelet in a truly tough and hard fought competition.
By he time the heads up started at 1.30 in the morning, Hsiung held a 3 to 1 chip advantage over his last opponent, Robert Hwang, a tough online player respected for living up to his internet nickname "ActionBob."
Unfazed by the difference in chip stacks, ActionBob fought his way back, starting a two hour ding-dong battle in which the lead changed several times between the two determined players.
Something had to give, and it was Hwang's cards, or the lack thereof, which enabled Hsiung to get ahead long enough to win the match and send his plucky opponent to the cashier and a $102,118 pay check.
Others on the final table included (in finishing order):
John Virtue – $76,244
Paul Berende – $57,310
Dwyte Pilgrim – $43,345
Matt Woodward – $32,994
Mitchell Davis – $25,266
John Myung – $19,474
Stephen Hung – $15,098
