Million Dollar Buy In WSOP Tournament
03/11/2012 : REAL POSSIBILITIES FOR A MILLION DOLLAR BUY-IN TOURNAMENT
33 commitments have already been made
The World Series of Poker's executive director, Ty Stewart revealed the latest developments in his organisation's bid to flight a million dollar buy-in tournament this week in an interview with Poker News.
Stewart said that the target cap for entrants with that sort of cash was 48, but that 33 well-heeled poker players had so far committed to entering for such an event, and he expected the cap would be reached.
"The number is over 30. I believe the number as of right now is 33. These are commitments that have given their word to Guy [Laliberte], and I think that makes them pretty credible that they'll actually put their money in the cage this summer," Stewart said.
"We are going to have small stakes regional players qualify via our guaranteed satellite program and several successful businessmen. It’s amazing to think this single event will inject tens of millions of dollars of new money into the poker economy. I think players will do whatever they can to pool together resources to try to get positive-EV type pros in the field."
Stewart also discussed the impact of legalised online poker on his organisation, and speculated that it could be massive, with entry fields of 15 000 players in the main event not outside the bounds of possibility once sponsoring companies were again completely free to run competitions with WSOP packages as prizes.
He also felt that the World Series of Poker could play a major role in a legalised poker environment due to its brand, experience, reputation and wide geographic access to players everywhere.
