New Jersey Denounces Federal Gambling Ban
Thursday April 24 ,2014 : NEW JERSEY DEMOCRATS DENOUNCE ATTEMPT TO FEDERALLY BAN ONLINE GAMBLING
State lawmakers say that the regulation and licensing of online gambling is clearly an issue for individual states to decide.
Adding their voices to the growing opposition to Sheldon Adelson's attempt to federally ban online gambling in the United States Wednesday were Democratic Party leaders in the state legislature, who assert that the regulation and licensing of online gambling is a state right.
Attacking banning proposals currently before Congress submitted by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz, New Jersey Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto said in a press release that online gaming “is clearly an issue best left for the states to decide and regulate.”
State Senate President Stephen Sweeney and other elected officials also commented on the determination and motives of land casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson to push through the banning proposals in Congress.
"It is disappointing that certain elements are working to dismantle New Jersey's landmark internet gambling law," said Sweeney. “We have quickly become a national leader in the world of internet gambling, and we simply cannot afford to have all our hard work and effort undone by the whims of a few down in Washington."
State Sen. Ray Lesniak agreed, saying that Congress should not interfere in state affairs:
“Instead of a dangerous, overseas black market, consumers in the state of New Jersey have a safe place to go – a program that not only includes essential consumer protections, but also generates thousands of dollars in revenue,” Lesniak said.
