TABLET GAMING WORTH $3 BILLION IN 2016
Sunday February 24,2013 : TABLET GAMING WORTH $3 BILLION IN 2016
Most in-game purchases on tablet will be made in Far East & China and North America says Juniper
According to the latest Juniper Research on tablet gaming, device users are to spend an estimated $3.03 billion on in-game purchases in 2016, far outstripping the $301 million calculated for 2012.
Research found a clear migration of users from dedicated portable gaming devices across to tablets, and some extent smartphones.
Siân Rowlands, the author of the report, gave some food for thought saying: "when we consider that only a small amount of gamers actually make in-game purchases, and those that do typically only spend a few dollars, it becomes apparent that there are a small proportion of consumers spending thousands annually on these virtual currencies, who subsidise the game for everyone else."
Free-to-play casino style games are benefitting from in-app purchases with games such as Slotomania, Poker by Zynga and Texas Poker seeing a sharp rise in the number of players buying chips and in-game items - some of which spend as much as $100 in one transaction to maintain a smooth and uninterrupted gaming session.
Looking ahead, the majority of in-game purchase revenue on tablets will be made in the Far East & China and North America, which will account for over 86 percent of users’ spend in 2016.
Smartphones will remain the primary device with which users make in-app purchases on, with more than $6 billion spent on them in 2016, more than double the amount spent on tablets.
