Sunday September 1,2013 : AUSSIES PET T.V. HATES INCLUDE HIGH PROFILE ONLINE BOOKIE
Some viewers can do without the ubiquitous Tom Waterhouse
Top Australian online bookmaker Tom Waterhouse heightened his personal profile by appearing on televised sports shows and giving his professional views on gambling odds before a political over-reaction curtailed his on-screen activities...but a consumer study shows that many television viewers disliked his contributions anyway.
The Age newspaper reports that the TV Tonight website polled over 1200 readers on their pet viewing hates, and among the usual complaints about shows not keeping to advertised schedules; series that are not completed; and out-of-date program guides was a beef about the intrusive nature of gambling promotions.
TV Tonight editor David Knox - who has run the annual study for the past five years - says the top three complaints are usually the same, but when he added a question to the survey about gambling ads there was a massive response, making the issue the fifth biggest beef overall.
Although Knox did not specifically reference the ubiquitous Mr. Waterhouse in the survey, readers often singled out the gaming celebrity in their comments, Know revealed.
''Whenever they discuss gambling ads on my website, he becomes the villain,'' he said.
Waterhouse’s company was recently the subject of an acquisition deal by William Hill plc
