Horse of Year Award Likely Goes to Breeders Cup Classic Winner

The Breeders' Cup is the biggest and richest horse racing weekend of the year. The 2014 two-day event begins on Friday, October 31 at Santa Anita Park. Saturday night's $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic will cap the event. The Classic has the strongest field of any event this year.

Shared Belief highlights the event. He’s the 8/5 betting favorite at Bovada. Shared Belief was the Eclipse Award winner last year as the champion two-year-old male. The gelding has yet to lose a race in seven career starts. Three of those victories are grade 1 stakes.

California Chrome captured the imagination of the thoroughbred racing world this spring with wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The colt finished fourth at the Belmont going for the Triple Crown. California Chrome's most recent race resulted in a disappointing sixth-place finish in September at the Pennsylvania Derby. He’s 13/2 to win the Classic as we go to press.

The 2014 Horse of the Year Award will go to Shared Belief (starting from Post 6) or California Chrome (Post 13) depending on who wins the 1 1/4 mile Classic. Not to forget Tonalist (Post 11) and Bayern (Post 7) who also have shots at winning the top honor if they manage a victory in the Classic.
