The operator of an illegal gambling operation in Taiwan learned the hard way this week that threatening a man’s family is almost guaranteed to generate a damaging backlash; one that in his case resulted in police action.
The China Post reports that Lin Chin-kun operated the sports gambling den in the guise of a teahouse in Jhonge, Taipei County. He and his associates attempted to collect gambling debts totaling some NT$ 5 329 000 from a client by putting pressure on his friend, harassing him and threatening him and his family incessantly.
Although he initially tried to help his friend by signing a cheque for half the gambling debt of his friend, the forty-year-old man was finally pushed too far, and in April he reported the illegal gambling activities to the police.
A raid followed, which recovered both the complainant’s cheque and computer equipment full of useful evidential information.  Investigations continue.
