World Series of Poker statistics

6/19/10 - The latest World Series of Poker statistics as poker’s biggest tournament sails past the halfway mark suggest that so far the revised schedule has been a positive move in regard to entries, if not in prize pools.
 
In the first twenty nine events of the tournament 30 552 entries have been registered – up almost 7 percent from last year’s numbers.
 
However, compared with the 40th World Series of Poker last year, the 2010 tournament has so far (over the first 29 events) delivered less prize money at $53.6 million (2009: $56.3 million), and none of the fields has yet to beat last year’s ‘Stimulus Special’ $1 000 buy-in NLHE event, which attracted an impressive 6 012 contestants – a record for an event that was not the main event of the tournament.
 
By way of example, consider the first $1 500 NLHE event, which attracted 2 791 last year despite the difficult economic environment, but only 2 092 in this year’s 41st WSOP – a worrying decline of 25 percent.
 
That said, other events have done better, and perhaps the remainder of the schedule will adjust the negative perception. Again as an example, the entry field for the $1 000 buy-in Seniors No-Limit Hold’em - event 34 – topped 3,141 this year, eclipsing the registration lists for last year, when 2,707 players entered.
 
Other interesting stats from the first half of the WSOP epic this year show that major events like the Seven Card Stud World Championship and the Seven Card Stud High-Low Split – both with high $10 000 buy-ins, showed improvements over last year’s entry numbers (by 5.6 and 3.7 percent respectively).
 
Even the $5,000 buy-in No Limit Hold’em field was up almost 21 percent this year, but it is difficult to draw a buy-in fault-line when one looks at the $1,500 buy-in Seven Card Stud High-Low Split event, where entries were up just on 38 percent in 2010, and the $1,500 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Six-Handed, where this year’s entries were up 14 percent!
 
Predictably, most of the winner’s bracelets this year have gone to players resident in the United States, who have claimed 20 of the coveted symbols of victory.  Players from the United Kingdom and Canada bagged another three per country, and Hungarian, New Zealand, and French players took home one apiece.
 
Bracelets have gone mainly to professional players in the first half of this year’s tournament, with only six amateur contestants prevailing in their events. Five players have entered the rolls of those who have achieved more than one bracelet in World Series of Poker events over the years.
