Over 20,000 players buy-in on first day
 
The latest edition of the 2012 Pokerstars World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) is off to a great start this week, with reports that over 20,000 players bought in to the two events on the first day.
 
With interest buoyed by blogs, news reports and radio updates the championship will be extensively covered over the next three weeks as 65 tournaments with an overall guaranteed prize pool of at least $30 million unfold, pulling in an eclectic mix of international stars and ordinary grinders.
 
On the first day, the $215 buy-in NLHE 6-Max drew 7,322 players, generating a prize pool well beyond its guarantee that reached $1.4 million, and the $215 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em competition pulled in another 10,608 hopefuls with a prize pool of $2.1 million, and a first prize of $302,969.
 
Both matches were still undecided when we went to press.
 
WCOOP again lived up to its reputation for attracting an international host of notable names, with first day players including Sandra Naujoks, Victor Ramdin, Humberto Brenes, Johnny Lodden, Jim Collopy and Marc-Andre Ladocouceur.
