2013 WSOP Event 23

Sunday June 16,2013 :  CHIU EARNS HIS FIFTH WORLD SERIES OF POKER BRACELET

Poker pro joins a select company of multi-bracelet wearers

Professional poker player David Chiu claimed his fifth WSOP winner's bracelet over the weekend, besting a field of 245 populated with great players to earn a place among multi-bracelet pros like Stu Ungar, Daniel Negreanu, John Juanda, Scotty Nguyen, and Jeff Lisandro.

Playing in Event 23: $2,500 buy-in Seven-Card Stud, Chiu scored his fifth bracelet after a seven year drought, hammering through a final table that could boast twelve previous bracelets among the finalists.

The final table confronting Chiu as the event raced toward a conclusion included formidable players like Mike Mizrachi, Freddie Ellis and Frank Kassela, along with Scott Seiver (who holds a WSOP bracelet), Gary Benson, Matthew Ashton and Adam Friedman.

When Ellis – one of the older players this year at 78 years young – busted in third it was young gun Seiver vs. experienced pro Chiu, with the latter holding a substantial chip lead that his young opponent was unable to conclusively overcome but fought against fiercely for the almost 90-hand heads up battle.

Chiu, whose career earnings exceed $7 million, added another bracelet to a collection that he started with his first WSOP victory 17 years ago, along with the first prize of $145,520, leaving Seiver with the runner-up cash of $89,980.
