Tuesday, March 29, 2016 : ALL-IRISH FINALE TO 2016 IRISH OPEN POKER

Daniel Wilson and Michael Conaty in tough heads up.

The 2016 Irish Open poker competition ended over the weekend with a truly Irish finale as Daniel Wilson and Michael Conaty fought it out for the lion's share of the Euro 801,500 prize pool generated by 802 entrants.

The two players dominated the action on the fourth and final day of the competition, with Conaty leading the field for much of the play on the approach to the final table, but Wilson holding the chip lead at the start of the heads up stage, which was to last for a hard-fought 90 minutes.

At one point the two survivors paused to negotiate a chop but could not come to an agreement and played on to the finish. That was a fortunate development for Wilson, who managed to eliminate a plucky opponent who at one point managed to even the stacks but could not prevail, leaving Wilson to claim the full first prize of Euro 150,000.

Conaty had to be content with the runner up pay day of Euro 85,000.

Other final table cashes included:

Tomas Soederstroem (Sweden) Euro 52,000
Vegard Ropstad (Norway) Euro 36,500
David Costello (Ireland) Euro 28,500
Petr Vejmelka (Czech Republic) Euro 22,500
Brian Nolan (Ireland) Euro 18,000
Igor Arkhipov (Russia) Euro 14,475
Michael Rossiter (Ireland) Euro 12,150
