Sunday July 24,2011 : VETERAN SPORTSBOOKS CLOSE

Shock shutdown of The Greek.com, Bet Jamaica.com and Poker World

The well established and generally respected sportsbook The Greek.com closed its doors to US customers – its predominant market – after a brief announcement this weekend.  No reason was given for the closure, although speculation inevitably started that it is due to the hostile environment in the United States.

The Greek.com enjoyed a top A+ rating at the authoritative sports book information site SBR. If you are still looking to sportsbet from the USA please check out Bodog Sportsbook.

The Greek.com's associated online poker site on the Cake Network, Poker World.com, is believed to have closed to US action as well.

The announcement was preceded by bad news for subsidiary Bet Jamaica.com, which advised its players it was closing and transferring them to The Greek.com if they had accounts at that venue, or to Heritage Sports if they did not.

The sports book operator stated that he personally guaranteed player funds and withdrawals of balances through Heritage Sports.

"Players with balances are free to play or withdraw their funds from Heritage as if accounts were still at The Greek or Bet Jamaica," SBR was informed.

"Players will be asked to acknowledge the account transfer to Heritage when they log in to their accounts."

This was followed by the news that The Greek.com, formerly Olympic Sports, was also closing to US players and transferring them to Heritage Sports, which holds a B+ rating at SBR.

The Greek.com has been in business for the past 8 years and is a popular option for mainly US punters. Non-US players have been assured that they will still be catered for, but because they comprise a relatively small percentage of the company's client base, it is not known how successful such a service will be.

The closures follow similar announcements last week by VIP.com, BetGameDay.com and Nine.com, and six online casinos in the English Harbour group
