CAR WORKERS CAUGHT GAMBLING ONLINE

Hyundai Motor workers disciplined

97 workers at the Hyundai Motor Company in Korea have been disciplined after admitting they had gambled online whilst at work, reports the Yonhap news agency.

The company revealed that following a snitch report that production line workers were using company time and computers to gamble on the internet, an IT audit was launched in April this year.

This revealed that 97 employees had made improper use of company time and computer equipment, and led to disciplinary action being taken internally by the company, a corporate spokesman said this week.

62 employees at its Ulsan plant and 35 employees at its Asan plant were involved in cyber gambling, betting as much as 100 million won ($92,000) in some cases, according to company officials.

The gambling case is expected to have a negative impact on the labour union’s fight against the automaker’s full enforcement of the time-off system, which imposes a salary cap for full-time unionists.
