"Operation Flat Rate" nets thirty-seven

Thirty-seven people allegedly linked to the notorious Gambino family were arrested in early morning raids conducted by New York authorities on Tuesday resulting in charges ranging from felony to misdemeanor counts.

The investigation dubbed "Operation Flat Rate", obtained evidence from a variety of sources that included wiretaps, GPS tracking, video and audio surveillance and was conducted throughout Manhattan, New Jersey, Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Authorities revealed that the operation uncovered various alleged bookmaking and loan sharking activities related to Gambino family enterprises with two offshore sports gambling operations generating millions of dollars in revenues received from wagers placed on college and professional sports and horse racing.

"These arrests cripple a network of criminal enterprises and the organized crime family they supported," said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The defendants' next court appearance will take place on December 8, 2011, reports the NY Daily News.
