Illegal internet sportsbetting operators sentenced to prison

Posted 1/21/11 : The Kansas City Star reports that Michael J. Lombardo (52) and William Cammisano Jr. (64) who were charged last year for their roles in an internet sports-betting operation have been sentenced to one year and one day in Federal prison.

The sportsbetting operation saw bettors provided with a toll-free number and two website addresses through which wagers were placed using account numbers and passwords in a scheme that allegedly attracted $2.6 million in bets between March 2006 and April 2009.  A Costa Rican company managed the phone number and the web server.

U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey who handed down the sentence said, “Given your age and experience, you knew better than to do this. You need to set an example and you didn’t.”
