A totally different type of Poker fish

There are many different types of fish in online poker and it is amazing that a few years ago, players that would have been considered “good” are now being seen as “fish”. One such example can be seen with the tight-aggressive or TAG player in full ring cash games. These days the full ring environment on all poker rooms basically have a large playing population of weak tight-aggressive regs in them! So just how can a TAG player be a bad player if “tight-aggressive” is the best way forward to make money for nearly all players?

Well the answer is quite simple. There is no set in stone style in online poker that is the best style ALL the time. I have lost count of the number of books and websites that I have read that talk about tight-aggressive being the best playing style. There is really only loose-aggressive when played by a good player that can compare to the TAG style in terms of profitability. However taking into account the entire global poker population then a TAG style definitely out performs the LAG style for sure.

However there are two problems associated with using a TAG style and never deviating from it. The first is that too many of your opponents will be using a similar style and this negates the effectiveness of your style. Secondly players are becoming sophisticated enough to respond to your style. So here we have one set of players who are playing almost equal to you and another set that are adjusting to you and are superior. So that only leaves players who are neither adjusting to you nor playing a similar style to you……the fish. However these really weak fish can only be seen in low stakes no limit games these days.

The fish who throw away 100bb or more with hands like top pair and top kicker and two pair are long gone. The cash games are much too tight-aggressive for that. However too many players are going into ring games with a TAG style in the belief that this is enough to make a good earn rate. Most of the time these players need rakeback and sign up bonuses just to make $10/hour. The reason why is simple……they are playing in style that is “weak-tight” and that style is being exploited by a new breed of poker player……the TAG-LAG. This is a player that primarily plays tight-aggressive but switches to loose-aggressive at the right moments.
