Advantages of New Jersey Online Gambling

Urges governor to sign new intrastate legalization bill

The Poker Players Alliance action group has issued a press release urging New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to sign new intrastate legalization legalising online gambling in the state. The bill has been under consideration by the governor for the past 45 days and is subject to a deadline today (February 7).

The governor can approve the bill, give a conditional veto sending it back to the Legislature for specific amendments, or absolutely veto the measure, in which case the veto can be overturned only by a two thirds majority vote in the Legislature. In the unlikely event that the governor does nothing at all, the bill will automatically pass into state law.

The PPA points out that the new law provides more than just a market for online gaming – it will strengthen the state’s economy and protect children and problem gamblers.

For reference by the governor, the action group has published two white papers here:

These are the compilation of existing studies by experts at Harvard University and Wells Fargo among others, and show that the Internet gambling bill would not only bring almost 4,000 new jobs to the state ansd add millions of dollars in revenue, but represent the most effective way to keep children safe and curb problem gambling.

Specifically, if signed into law, the internet gambling legalization will allow:

Atlantic City to thrive. The bill would create almost 4,000 new jobs, raise $150 million in tax revenue. Local unions and an independent analysis by Wells Fargo all agree that online gambling will be a boon to the city and land-based casinos.

Problem gambling to be curbed. Study after study finds that online gambling inherently provides more and better mechanisms to prevent and combat problem gaming than are available in the offline gambling market.

Children to be protected. A 2010 Harvard University study found that “the best way to protect families and consumers in connection with cyber gambling is by legalizing it.
