Alphadraft shuts down

LEGAL AND LEGISLATIVE MINEFIELDS SINK DAILY FANTASY E-SPORTS SITE

FanDuel subsidiary Alphadraft shuts down.

Legal and legislative developments since it was acquired last year by FanDuel have resulted in daily fantasy eSports operator Alphadraft advising its players this week that it is closing down.

The closure is effective tomorrow (October 21) following the conclusion of the League of Legends World Championship, with players advised to withdraw any positive balances.

Alphadraft  and Vulcun were among the three main sites exploiting the fantasy eSports sub-vertical; Vulcun finally shut down in July this year , whilst DraftKings appears to have reduced its commitment, although it is still offering eSports products.

Citing a challenging market due to legal and legislative hurdles, the operator advised that it regretted that it was necessary to make the "difficult" decision to halt operations.

"As we continue to evaluate the eSports landscape," AlphaDraft said in its email to players, "we are announcing today that we have made the difficult decision to stop offering fantasy eSports contests on AlphaDraft as of Friday, October 21, at the conclusion of the League of Legends World Championship."
