Bally and IGT hope to be the pioneers in Nevada online poker legalization

Bally Technologies and International Game Technology are hoping to blaze the trail to Nevada online poker legalization next week when their applications for licenses in the gambling state come up for consideration by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

If the two companies clear that hurdle the applications will go to the Nevada Gaming Commission for its final imprimatur, although no one seems quite certain what will happen after that.

Some observers have pointed out that the legalization initiative is conditional on federal government legalization, whilst the more optimistically minded contend that there is an implied federal approval in the Department of Justice's December admission that only sports betting is covered by the Wire Act.

Control Board chairman Mark Lipparelli is on record as predicting that legalised intrastate online poker could be in operation in Nevada within the next seven to 10 months. Certainly there has been no shortage of applicants for licenses.
