Nine Month Review Of Danish Online Gambling

01/09/2013 : FIRST NINE MONTHS OF DANISH ONLINE GAMBLING

Regulator DGA reports that the market was stable during its first three quarters, but revenues differ widely

The Danish online gambling regulator has summarised operations in the first nine month period since the jurisdiction was opened up to foreign companies, reporting that the first quarter was the best for sports betting licensees, whilst online casino operators fared better in Q2.

Gross gaming revenues varied widely:

* Almost half of the 51 licensees (spread over 33 operating companies) will have earned less than a million dollars each (Danish Kroner 5 million) by the end of Q4.

* 8 online casino and 4 betting licensees are expected to reach a GGR above 25 million DKK (around $4.5 million) each by end Q4.

The regulator reported on rates of return for players, noting that casino action returned 96 percent of turnover, 11 percent greater than the 85 percent experienced by sports betting punters.

Online poker showed a decline, ending the third quarter of 2012 down 7 percent when compared with Q1-2012.

The regulator forecasts that once the statistics for the full year have been assembled and analysed, the total GGR from online gambling in the Danish market will be almost $340 million (Danish Kroner 1.94 billion), or nearly a quarter of the total Danish market, valued at Danish Kroner 7.5 billion ($1.3 billion), of which the former state monopoly Danske Spil holds some 62 percent, a number that could diminish as competition grows.
