Almost two-thirds of sports betting revenues in Denmark from online

ONLINE A MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO GAMBLING MARKET IN DENMARK

Licensed Internet operators contribute almost two-thirds of sports betting revenue.

Figures for Q1-2016 released this week by the Danish regulator Spillemyndigheden indicate that almost two-thirds of sports betting revenues generated by licensed operators in the Danish gambling market come from internet enterprises.

Total revenues for the quarter were up 30 percent year-on-year at DKK 975 million (US $146 million), continuing a consistent five year growth pattern in which sports betting continues to dominate, creating revenue up 33 percent y-o-y at DKK 585 million…DKK 370 million of that (around 63.5 percent) coming from internet sources.

On the online casino front the vertical again delivered a creditable performance, growing revenue 30 percent y-o-y to DKK 345 million in a sixth year running of growth.

The Spillemyndigheden numbers show that online poker showed little if any improvement in the quarter, performing slightly better than the previous quarter at DKK 45 million.

Spillemyndigheden estimates that the total Danish gambling market will deliver growth of 8 percent in 2016 on a year-on-year basis, presenting a 20 percent overall improvement since 2012, when the Danish market was liberalised.

The regulator predicts that revenue per Danish punter will rise 5 percent to around DKK 2,000 by end 2016.
