Countrymen clash in heads up

Travelling from the other side of the world, two South Africans confronted one another in the heads up of the $2,700 buy-in Asia Poker Tour Philippines main event, which concluded in Manila this week.

Divan Le Roux and fellow South African Conrad Coetzer bested a field of 54 entrants and a final table of ten in the event, which played out at Resorts World Manila, Pasay City.

The South African duo faced a table that comprised Ryan Hong, Oliver Speidel (chip leader), Han Wook Kim, Nicandro Filart, Franklin Acfalle, Antonio Martins, David Steicke and Adam Monaghan.

For much of the final table it looked as if Spiedel, who held the chip lead at the start, was the man to beat; he sent at least four players to the exit but was ultimately busted out himself in fourth place.

The Coetzer vs. Le Roux heads up was a tense and action-packed affair, with both players demonstrating good skills and loads of aggressive but disciplined play that kept the lead changing and adrenalin levels high.

In the end it was decided by a single card, and the game, along with the kudos and the $197,000 main prize, went to Le Roux.

His very worthy opponent's consolation prize was a hefty $104,000 runner-up check.
