Police action against Euro 2012 gambling intensifies
Police reports earlier this week that two betting syndicates in Penang, Malaysia had been busted have been followed by the news that a further syndicate, this one in George Town has been broken up.
Police raided a cyber cafe Monday evening after undercover investigations, arresting three men and seizing hardware and documentary evidence, along with cash. A police spokesman said the operation organised high value online bets, mainly on international football.
Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice staff officer DSP Zailani Amit said there were indications that the illegal enterprise had been facilitating wagers on the Euro 2012 football championships currently ongoing in Ukraine.
In related news, police in Bangkok, Thailand have reported the arrest of 60 people, five of them bookies, in a major swoop on illegal online betting centres placing bets on Euro 2012 matches.
