The city attorney's office for Los Angeles has filed litigation against Figure 8 Technologies, a North Carolina developer of casino-style software games it supplies to local internet cafes, alleging that the company is providing illegal gambling services, and accusing it of unfair competition and false advertising.
 
The Associated Press news agency reports that prosecutors claim Figure 8 Technologies is providing  illegal games "masquerading as legal sweepstakes" in what appears to be a new clampdown on cyber cafe activity.
 
Court documents filed by the city name five since closed internet cafe operators and claims that the games spun reels or dealt virtual cards as in real casino games. Players bought and wagered in points and their winnings could be redeemed for cash.
 
Figure8 is yet to respond to the allegations.
