Monday November 18 ,2013 : APP WATCH LIST TO BE PUBLISHED BY SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT

Watch list is designed to warn parents about apps unsuitable for children.

Gambling apps may be targeted in a new watchlist planned by the South Australian government that is designed to warn parents of apps that are designated as unsuitable for children.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the watch list will be compiled by the state government, backed by legalization to classify gambling-style games and phone apps.

"Children can access these games online and through social media and they are readily available for download on their phones, tablets and game consoles," the provincial premier warned.

"Research has shown that early exposure to gambling-like games may lead to some children developing problem gambling habits later in life."

The online watch list will be posted alongside a forum for parents to comment on apps and refer any concerns to the state's Classification Council.

Weatherill said the police now checked on the internet for dangers, just as they patrolled the streets to help keep the public safe.

"Our children are more savvy than ever before at using technology and we need to be alert to the effects on children's behaviour and development," he said.
