Indiana and Oregon Lawmakers Seem Keen on Online Gambling

Here are some developments in Indiana and Oregon Online Gambling news. Both Indiana and Oregon are two US states that are currently caught up in the mix when it comes to online gambling. More specifically, the legalization of online gambling sites. The issue of whether to permit something or not may play on the minds of some. But for the major lawmakers in each country, deciding whether to permit online gambling in certain aspects is a no brainer.

Indiana Approves of Online Lotteries

The top lawmakers in Indiana don’t seem to have any issues with permitted lottery tickets to be bought online. Todd Huston (House Speaker) and Rodric Bray (Senate Pro Term) have no qualms about removing legislation surrounding the decision. The issue doesn’t seem to be so much about whether lottery tickets can be bought online, but about should have a say on the matter.

The 1989 Statute

According to a 1989 statute, the Indiana Lottery Commission has permission to govern the lottery in terms of deciding how tickets are sold. They also have carte blanche when it comes to “any other matters necessary” in terms of how it is run “for the convenience of the public”. The two lawmakers in question do not believe that Indiana’s senate needs to “approve” online lottery ticket sales because they believe the lotto commission already has this power themselves under the 1989 statute. Arguing against the move are lawmakers who believe that brick and mortar casinos will be disadvantaged. For now, SB 417 states that legislative approval must occur. But in the coming days, that may be sidestepped. Giving the power to the Indiana Lottery Commission.

Oregon Sports Betting Latest

It isn’t just Indiana where things are perking up. Over in Oregon, Senate President, Peter Courtney, is hoping that as of 2023, bettors in the state will be able to legally wager on college basketball’s March Madness. SB1503 (introduced by Courtney) aims to permit the Oregon Lottery the authority to take bets on college sports, including basketball.

Two amendments recently appeared, one of which forbids bets on individual athletes (namely their performance). While the other says the state’s revenue should go to college grants. At present, players in Oregon already have legal betting options at their disposal. But they must visit a tribal casino to do so. The new bill won’t remove tribal casinos from the picture. It will merely permit the lottery and sites such as DraftKings to get in on the picture.
