Kelly Mathis Denied Retrial

FLORIDA ONLINE GAMBLING RE-TRIAL ORDER STANDS (Update)

State attorney general denied appeal for court to reconsider re-trial judgement.

Florida’s Fifth District Court of Appeal has denied a request by the State Attorney General to reconsider an October 2016 ruling allowing Allied Veterans of the World lawyer, Kelly Mathis, a retrial.

Recentpoker.com readers will recall the massive $300 million Allied Veterans of the World online gambling bust which brought down the state lieutenant governor two years ago.  Mathis was convicted of leading a $300 million gambling ring that used the veterans’ charity as a front. The Jacksonville lawyer was convicted of 103 counts of racketeering, possessing slot machines and other charges and sentenced to six years in prison. He was also accused of operating dozens of illegal internet cafes.

Mathis won a reprieve late last year when the appeal court decided that the original trial judge should have allowed Mathis' legal team to call certain witnesses to bolster its defense and awarded a retrial.
