Malaysian online gambling operators not Deterred by Raids

Officials in Sepang say that repeated raids do not deter operators from re-launching operations….sometimes within hours.
 
Malaysian online gambling operators appear to be a persistent lot, despite an enforcement environment that sees sustained police and municipal raids on a daily basis and the seizure of computer equipment and cash, along with threats to cut off power supplies for repeat offenders.
 
Officials in Sepang complained about the situation Thursday, saying that local online operators providing access to gambling from overseas websites appear to have no respect for the law and are undeterred by the widespread raiding against their illegal businesses.
 
The local council revealed that there were operators in the region who had been raided repeatedly and shuttered on as many as 18 occasions, but they resumed activity…some back in business within hours.
 
"They remain undaunted by the authorities as the existing laws do nothing to curb these activities," said MPSepang Enforcement Division deputy director Hairol Azman Razali
 
"MPSepang has provisions under the Cyber Centres & Cyber Cafes By-Laws 2007, but our role is limited to the task of seizing things."
 
The official revealed that more than 200 raids were conducted this year and 18,684 computers worth RM2 million were seized in Sepang alone.
 
He said that the cooperation of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the police had been sought in a bid to restrict access to illegal online gambling sites, mostly operated from abroad.
