Michigan Approves Interstate Poker Bill
Online poker is likely to be on its way to Michigan as early as next year, Michigan poker players are rejoicing. The Michigan Senate recently passed Bill 991. Now there is just a single hurdle remaining between online poker becoming a reality in the state. All that stands in the way now is approval from the House of Representatives. Nobody is saying that this will be a walk in the park, but many in the US state believe that it is only a matter of time now before players in Michigan can play poker online. Michigan Says Yes to Poker
Last year, Michigan passed the Lawful Internet Gambling Act (LIGA) which would essentially pave the way for online gambling (or at least elements of it), to become fully legal in the state. The latest bill (SB-991) is practically an amendment to the LIGA. It permits the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) the right to enter into pacts with poker regulators in other states and tribal gaming groups. However, it must be stressed that what the Senate Bill 991 does not do is lay down any specific regulations or laws for interstate poker. The bill merely proposes that the option would be legal, should Michigan wish to go down that path. The bill passed 36-1.
A November Timetable Looks Likely For Michigan Poker
The bill is unlikely to make its way to the House of Representatives until at least late November. On account of the upcoming US presidential election. However, few are predicting that it will fail, whatever the outcome. Senator Curtis Hertel Jr has been a major sponsor of the bill. He has been involved in other Michigan-based US online gambling efforts. It is the senator who has had to tackle the state lottery, who had fears about interstate poker producing prizes which would rival the Powerball.
Land-based casinos in the state are not happy about the bill, either. Although it is thought that some are changing their tune concerning online gambling activities after seeing their revenues fall due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Which Operators Will Move to Michigan?
Nobody in Michigan wants to get ahead of themselves. In addition there is already talk about when Michigan could start offering online poker. Furthermore which operators would be interested in setting up shop there. The WSOP is the only interstate competition in the US. It already operates in Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey, and will soon run in Pennsylvania. However, PokerStars also operates in Pennsylvania. Both operators may see Michigan as an ideal target should SB-991 become a reality next month.
