What is the definition of an MVP? The world looks at an MVP as a player that has the most value to his team and a player that the team could not win without. As the World Series starts to get closer, a lot of fans are starting to think about potential World Series MVP candidates. As the league championship series keep moving along, we all know that anything can happen. The NLCS looks like it will go right down to the wire as the San Francisco Giants won game two in a convincing fashion. But the ALCS could be over quicker, and that may be where the World Series MVP comes from.
The games played by managers during the playoffs are constantly moving players around in the lineup and making it difficult for fans to keep track of things. Former San Francisco ace Tim Lincecum spent the NLDS in the bullpen and got his first start in the NLCS. The idea of Lincecum playing in relief is not something that the Giants’ fans are used to, but it is what the Giants feel it needs to do to win the series. So far, it looks like San Francisco may be right in the way it is utilizing the declining talents of Tim Lincecum.
In the ALCS, the New York Yankees seem to be fighting an uphill battle against the Detroit Tigers and bad luck. The experts are still wondering how the Yankees are going to overcome the loss of captain Derek Jeter for the rest of the playoffs. Jeter was not only playing strong defense, but he was also getting clutch hits. Without Jeter, the Yankees could be in big trouble. That is the definition of an MVP. But since Jeter will be unable to continue in the playoffs, he will not be a consideration for the World Series MVP award.
Miguel Cabrera is the Tigers’ triple crown winning hitter and one of the cornerstones of the Detroit offense. The sports experts are thinking that Cabrera is going to get voted in as the AL MVP based on the fact that his offensive exploits helped to push the Tigers into the playoffs. But is his contribution to the team’s playoff run enough to warrant a consideration as World Series MVP, if the Tigers make it to the Fall Classic?
The final piece of the Tigers’ puzzle is pitcher Justin Verlander. Without Verlander’s complete game against the A’s in game five of the ALDS, that series could have ended much differently. Verlander seems to be getting stronger as the playoffs go on and his ability to completely dominate games makes him the obvious choice for World Series MVP, provided that the Tigers get that far. Judging by how the ALCS is going, Detroit should be advancing to the World Series in two or three games.
