Friday June 7,2013 : Possible MLB Suspensions Will Have Varying Effects On MLB Futures, Daily Lines

When the news broke earlier this week about the potential suspensions the MLB was prepared to hand down in response to allegations of PED use, the first reaction that a number of baseball fans had was shock. Even with everything that has happened to the sport over the past decade, there has never been anything like this, when the league was able to crack down on so many top players at once and with so much damning information. The MLB has apparently reached an agreement with Tony Bosch, the founder of the Biogenesis of the American clinic in Miami to fully cooperate on the matter after his clinic reportedly helped provide players with PED’s. With punishment expected to come down at some point this week, there will undoubtedly be repercussions. The impact will vary depending on the individual players, with both the money line and future wagers being affected.

No team will be hurt more by the potential suspensions than the New York Yankees, who are faced with the very real possibility that Robinson Cano could be on that list. The All-Star second basemen is batting .279 with 14 home runs and 36 RBI, which is a big reason for the Yankees being in the mix for an American League East title. Even with Cano the New York offense ranks 17th in the majors in runs scored, and it would be incredibly difficult to contend for a division title without him. That is a major concern for the players that bet on the pinstripes to go over the total in the futures wins before the season began, and will also have an obvious impact on their daily lines. The Yankees are also faced with the chance that Alex Rodriguez is on that list, but the reality is the organization hasn’t missed him at all and wouldn’t going forward.

New York isn’t the only contender that could be dealt a devastating blow, as the Texas Rangers would suffer a major hit to their chances in the AL West if they lose Nelson Cruz. Cruz leads the Rangers’ 10th-ranked scoring offense with 14 home runs and 40 RBI this season, and losing his power in the heart of the lineup would be a huge blow. Texas does have a little more depth than the Yankees, but it would be a significant loss nonetheless.

With so many big names involved in the latest news, the impact will scale across all of baseball and it’s hard to measure exactly how things will play out. While Cano and Cruz are the two biggest losses in terms of the impact it will have on the online betting futures bets and money lines, there are other hitters that could also miss time and that will have a negative impact on their respective teams. Ryan Braun, Jhonny Peralta, and Melky Cabrera are among the other names expected to be on the list, and it will be interesting to see how things play out when the actual suspensions are handed down.
