Patriotic punters wreak GBP 15 million's worth of damage to bookmaking firms
 
Andy Murray's spectacular Wimbledon finals tennis win over Novak Djokovic on Sunday proved to be a costly affair for British bookies, who reportedly took a GBP 15 million drubbing from patriotic Brit punters who bet heavily at 11-8 on Murray.
 
A spokeswoman for Ladbrokes said that the match had cost the company "a packet".
 
“Murray began the final as the underdog and it seemed that punters were betting with their hearts rather than their heads… but we’re thrilled to be proved wrong,” she said.
 
Murray’s win means he is now just 7-4 to triumph again next year.
