9 survivors from a field of 502 are all that remain

The last nine players standing in the Paddy Poker Irish Open currently running in Dublin will probably come back to the table today thinking "there can be only one" as they contemplate a main prize worth Euro 420,000 and eight opponents to beat.

Starting three days back with an entry field of 502 hopefuls, the competition has been refined down to a final table comprising chip leader Ian Simpson on 2,007,000, chased by David “Dixie” Dean on 1,986,000; Steve Watts (1,519,000); Thomas Beer (1,319,000); Andrew Black (808,000); Jordan Lewis (685,000); Philip Magennis (632,000); Samuel Chartier (582,000); and Kevin Vandersmissen (492,000)..

In the process, some of the top guns in the international game have been eliminated, including 11-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, busted out at 33rd and Freddy Deeb at 27th.
