Palumbo bests field of 172 in World Poker Tour Venice main event

World Series of Poker bracelet holder Rocco Palumbo (24) from Genova, Italy has claimed the main prize of Euro 140,000 after besting a field of 172 other players in the Euro 3,300 buy-in World Poker Tour Venice at Casino Di Venezia.

Palumbo, who is a seasoned live tournament player with many major events under his belt, was among the short stacks on a final table that comprised Marcello Montagner, Mike Sexton, Roberto Begni, Xia Lin and Erion Islamay over the holiday weekend, but he soon got to work building his stack, and by the time the heads up was decided with the exit of third placed Mike Sexton, he was holding a million chip lead over his final opponent, Marcello Montagner.

It was a sufficiently big advantage to make for a short heads up, and less than half an hour in Montagner was heading for the cashier's cage and a second placing pay day of Euro 84,200

It was Palumbo's biggest win yet in a career since 2009 that has seen him take down two other first places, one of them at a WSOP bracelet event, with his career earnings now over a million dollars.
