AUSSIE COURT FINDS SPORTSBET GUILTY

Friday June 1, 2012 : AUSSIE COURT FINDS SPORTSBET GUILTY (Update)

Found to have offered free inducements for opening betting accounts

The long running case in which the Australian State of Victoria's Commission for Gambling and Regulation brought charges against Betfair, International All Sports Limited trading as IASBet.com, Sportsbet and Betezy Limited for offering free inducements to punters for opening betting accounts has ended with Melbourne Magistrate Julian Fitz-Gerald finding Sportsbet and All Sports Limited guilty.

According to a report in The Age, Fitz-Gerald ruled that Sportsbet Pty Ltd's website advertisement was an offer rather than an invitation to make an offer for a contract and the company was fined AU$3 000.

IASbet.com was fined AU$4500 in relation to the six charges brought against it.

Sportsbet has included a website disclaimer on the offer that effectively bars Victorian residents saying it will consider its options and may appeal the decision.
